  • Typically, construction takes between 6 to 8 months, depending on the complexity and customization required.

  • Each county has individual regulations for garden suites. We’re here to help you navigate the regulations in your area.

  • Government incentive programs for backyard suites are often available. Contact us for more info on current programs.

  • Yes. You need a development permit to build a garden suite on your property. Once you have a final design, we take care of the rest.

  • Yes, a garden suite can be detached from the main house. There are three main styles of garden suites:

    • Built onto the existing home

    • Free-standing single-story

    • Free-standing over a garage

  • Garden suites have the option of drawing utilities from the main house or having their own.

    In the case of city services, such as water and sewer, it’s usually best to connect the garden suite separately.

    In rural cases with a well and septic system, it’s often possible to connect to the existing well, but it's usually recommended to provide the garden suite with its own septic system.

  • Garden suites must meet the same energy efficiency standards and code requirements as a normal home based on the Canadian Building Code and local by-laws.

  • When applying for grants or forgivable loans, there are often restrictions as to who can live in a garden suite, but if you aren’t applying for government funding, there are no restrictions.
